Understanding Substance Abuse and Addiction
This comprehensive program is presented by two of America’s most experienced and renowned experts in Addiction. For more than 20 years, Drs. Ted Parran and Chris L. Adelman have been at the leading edge nationally in the practice of addiction medicine and recovery as well a major resource for training and educational materials for physicians and other behavioral care professionals. These professionals see patients daily at Ohio treatment facilities, including St.Vincent Charity Hospital, Windsor Laurelwood Hospital, Huron Hospital, Cleveland Treatment Center (methadone maintenance), Glenbeigh Hospital and others. In 1990, the pair also started an addiction medicine fellowship for physicians, which has trained dozens of doctors.

The Introduction to Addiction takes the decades of experience in treating patients and presents a basic, but thorough overview in a plain English manner so that both juveniles, adults, and family members of addicted people can understand the basics of addiction. This introduction is a foundation as a first program that provides lifesaving opportunities, and is the keystone to learning the important first step to admit addiction, understand addiction before a user can deal with it appropriately.

After viewing the the first two parts covering Substance Abuse and Addictive Disease, the user will then need to view the programming that applies to their specific life. Thorough and powerful sessions are available in these topic areas:

  • Alcohol Abuse and Addiction, benzos, and barbituates.
  • Cannibinoids: Marijuana, THC, synthetic cannabinoids like Spice, K2, etc.
  • Opiates: Heroin, Opium, Morphine, Codeine, Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, Methadone, Hydromorphone.
  • Stimulants: cocaine, crack, methamphetamine, ecstasy, bath salts, methylphenidate, amphetamines.
  • Prescription Drugs
All addiction related programs are detailed and practical information for the user presented by medical professionals who have counseled and turned around the lives of thousands of patients. These are not theories from classrooms, but proven therapy that can and will make a difference in the lives of those who take these high quality and challenging programs.

Increasingly, individual therapy is becoming more recognized as effective in society. American Online Learning Center’s approach uses intense immersive learning techniques like those of leading American universities and immerses the user in a highly challenging learning environment. The user must successfully identify themselves as the person who is required to take the course, must pay attention by answering challenging questions, and cannot move onto to the next subject area without successfully answering the questions. Just like leading universities, online educational programming is growing, but this program is not “easy” by any means. It is designed as a program where the user can and will learn practical and proven approaches to behavior modification. The user is not coddled nor told that they are victims, they are empowered to take meaningful control of their lives, make crucial behavior changes, and above all, not make the same judgment error that got them to this course in the first place.

IMPORTANT: It is required for the student to successfully complete Part 1 and Part 2 of this course PLUS the specialty lesson that applies to their sentence to get full credit.

  Lessons
Part 1: Substance Abuse
This introductory lesson allows you to understand what happens to people when they have chosen to abuse substances including drugs and alcohol. It goes through what each abused product and how the mind and body reacts to those products. The program is presented by medical experts who have seen thousands of patients and impart their knowledge to you about how products can go from being used appropriately, and then what leads to abuse. Abuse means that the abuse can stop, and that a person can stop abusing, but the program will also point out how abuse turns into addiction, a far more difficult problem to solve. It also will walk you through how to safely not abuse drugs and alcohol.

Part 2: Addictive Disease
What starts out as abuse, something that can be controlled, can lead to addiction, something that cannot be controlled and sprials into deep problems that almost always never ends well. This very straight forward and honest presentation talks about how people can move from abuse to addiction, the signs, the major negative impact that addiction has on you and all those that interact with you. However, the program will also show ways that you can overcome and be better than addiction, the methods that you can get off that slippery slope and get back on a healthy and clean path in life. This lesson can save lives, and the medical professionals who present it to you have saved many lives when their advice has been followed.

Alcohol: Beer, Wine, Mixed Drinks
If products like alcohol, beer, wine and have caused you to become an abuser or addicted, this lesson is the follow up to the Introduction. You will gain extensive knowledge about how you, your body, and your mind behave by abusing these products or being addicted to them. You will understand how it makes you feel and what it really does inside of you. This follow up lesson provides deep understanding of how to help yourself and what to do to seek additional help, if needed. Even though these products are legal, you must know them if you are to use them safely, or if addicted, know how not to use them.

Stimulants: Cocaine, Meth, Ecstasy
Cocaine, Meth, Ecstasy, are widely used drugs that stimulate your brain, but also have so many side affects that people who use this drug need to understand. This presentation will teach you what happens to your mind and body when using these drugs, how they impact your life and relationships, and very much negatively alter your health and welfare. There are no harmless drugs, and this class of drugs are some of the most harmful. You will also learn how to get yourself off of these drugs and how to get help if you need it, to get off of these drugs. You can lead a productive and healthy life, but not if you are using, abusing, or addicted to Stimulants.

Opiates: Heroin, Opiates, and Opiods
Heroin, and its similar drugs are quite honestly killing people all over the nation. It is being termed "The Heroin Epidimic" as this drug spreads from city to suburb to rural America, and leaving dead bodies in its wake. This is one of the most important lessons you will take in your life if you have a heroin problem. Quite honestly, the time you spend learning this lesson can save your life, and that is not an exaggeration. Heroin is that dangerous, that addictive, that deadly, and so we have to be honest with you, pay as close of attention to this program as you can, learn from it, and let us help you before you become a statistic. If this sounds tough, it is because we care about you and all humanity and do want to provide assistance for your betterment. This lesson will examine all aspects of heroin addiction and how to overcome it. You can do it, and we can help.

Marijuana: Cannabinoids
If Marijuana or other cannibus based drugs got you here, this lesson is for you. Medical professionals who have dealt with people who have abused or been addicted to Marijuana (yes, you can become addicted to marijuana) will present very important information to you that will open your eyes. You will learn that this is not a harmless substance, how these substances affect your life, your employment opportunities, your interpersonal skills, your finances. This is the real "dope" on dope, and you will learn that what you see in the movies, hear on the streets, see on television about marijuana being a harmless drug are just not true, take it from the experts and begin the process of a more productive and meaningful life.

Prescription Drugs: Over the Counter and Prescribed Drugs
Just like they sound, prescription drugs do wonders for people that they are prescribed to help, but when used outside of a Doctor's orders, do harm to your mind and body, even though they are legal. But legal prescription drug abuse often leads to the addictive desire to buy illegal drugs, and drugs that are not "controlled" for quality and quantity. Prescription abuse and addiction is abundant and can happen to people without realizing it, or people who intend to misuse these drugs. However you found yourself here, this lesson will open your eyes and allow you to receive the help you need and deserve.
